Five feel-good habits for 2019

Yep, it’s that time of the year again! 

Probably like a lot of people, I’m not a champion at keeping up with my resolutions. Yet instead of beating myself up for giving up – and truth be told, not remembering – last year’s resolutions, I’ve decided to compile a list of five feel-good habits. I started implementing them this year and they’ve had a pretty positive impact on my life so far. 

Those are all things I intend to keep doing in 2019 so let’s say this is also a great way to take the pressure off.

1. On wellness and taking care:

Taking care of yourself is a big part of my writing and the core of my novel Celebration

I usually have a lot of trouble sleeping. The issue intensified about two years ago while I was caught in the midst of depression. I somehow wanted to reconnect with my body and give it some rest without having to resort to sleeping pills. This simple short bedtime Yoga with Adriene video was easy to practice at home without requiring a ton of equipment. I loved it and kept following Adriene’s channel ever since.

For those of you who are interested, Adriene has a great 30-day Yoga challenge. It starts every January and she posts one new video every day for a whole month. I love that the videos are quite short – usually between 20 to 40 minutes.  You can do it all at home with just a yoga mat or even a towel.

Finally for those of you who aren’t a big fan of at-home yoga, know that a lot of sportswear brands actually offer FREE classes. That’s something else I found out thanks to Yoga with Adrienne when she mentioned the Adidas Fitness studio in London. I have tried it and it’s simply amazing.

I personally love yoga but any physical activity can help. You’ll sleep and feel much better overall.

2. On staying on track: 

I don’t know if it’s because I just celebrated my birthday a few weeks ago and I keep feeling behind in my own life but I somehow decided to set myself on this one-year journey of trying to “make things happen”. 

I’ve always had this tendency to set way too many goals for myself. I would then feel miserable because I couldn’t keep up with them. So as I decided to prioritise certain objectives this year, I rolled up my sleeves and opened up my notebook to focus on two distinct phases: 1) planning goals and 2) tracking progress. 

I came across Lavendaire’s YouTube channel based on the suggested videos on my homepage. That’s how much YouTube knows me well. Aileen’s channel is a must-watch for anyone who is aspiring to get their life back-on-track in a very actionable kind of way. It is filled with great resources and tips that are easy to digest which can be sometimes hard to find in an overwhelming place like the internet. Of course, there are a lot of lifestyle channels that are just as good but so far, Lavendaire’s videos on planning and tracking goals are my favourite. Also, I love the fact that Aileen is a B-Schooler (see next bullet) just like me!

3. On continuous education:

I’ve had this very stupid notion that because I had two college degrees and spent a lot of money on it, I didn’t need to keep educating myself. I should just keep up with the current trends, have a profile up on every social media, read a few books here and there and that would do the trick. Besides, since all I wanted was to be a writer, the only thing I would really need is a publisher and maybe an agent.

I don’t even know how to start explaining all the ways I was wrong. Learning new things engages your curiosity, keeps you connected to yourself and the world around you and is overall an amazing boredom-killer, that same boredom that is usually a fertilizer for depression. 

I found out about Marie Forleo’s B-school program via Gabby Bernstein’s newsletter. I was on a trip and was telling my friend about how I wanted to take my writing to the next level but didn’t really know how. A couple of days later, I received Gabby’s weekly newsletter with a link to Marie’s video promoting B-School. 

Marie Forleo is an entrepreneur and the founder of Marie TV, a YouTube channel dedicated to growing your business. B-school is Marie’s 8 week, online marketing program. I was a bit skeptical at first, especially because of the cost of the program (about $2000) but I still decided to trust the timing of the universe.

I eventually enrolled and completed the entire program – twice so far. 

4. On conscious living:

Alex Stedman from The Frugality has recently written a great post about ways to cut down on domestic waste. 

I realise since moving to London how easy it is to just buy to-go beverages with a Starbucks or Caffe Nero around every corner although this is not necessarily a good thing for my wallet or the environment. The big issue I had with tap water was the taste but I purchased Binchotan charcoal water filter still from &Keep and that does the trick just fine.

I recently bought a reusable bamboo coffee cup as well as a water bottle (instead of buying plastic ones) using one of the brands (&keep) mentioned in her post.

Another thing I started doing is using Ecosia instead of Google as my search engine. I found out about them while watching one of Lavendaire’s video. Ecosia is a search engine that basically plants tree as you search the web. To sum up, that’s just a great way to combine a daily habit of surfing the internet while doing something great for the planet, all of that at zero cost. 

5. On the benefits of a good laugh:

Well, I’m pretty sure everyone’s already aware of the huge benefits laughing has on your body.  It also just makes your whole day better and as the saying goes, a day without laughter is a day wasted.

I actually have a list of my to-go Instagram accounts and youtube videos for when I’m feeling down and need to cheer up a little. Needless to say that when one of my best friends introduced me to Kalen Allen this summer, he instantly made the list. 

My energy level was pretty low and I was bored out of my mind at work. She sent me this video from the Ellen DeGeneres show and not only did it save the day, but it made my entire week.

I realise how small these changes may be but I’ve found that taking it one step at a time suits me better these days.
